About Catalina's
The dream of Catalina's became reality when owner and chef Jon Hallowell opened the restaurant's doors in April 2007.
A triumph of sheer determination partnering with culinary vision and family support, the restaurant is named after Jon's mother Catalina, a native-born Spaniard hailing from the island of Mallorca and owner of The Queen and The Princess co-op boutiques located above the restaurant.
Chef Jon Hallowell has been cooking since he could hold a spoon in his hand. He is the grandson of Juan Balaguer, who for 30 years reigned as Executive Chef of the old Ritz-Carlton Hotel located at Broad and Walnut Streets in Philadelphia.
After attending the Restaurant School in Philadelphia, Chef Jon apprenticed in Palma de Mallorca.
Like his grandfather Juan, Jon's cooking is influenced by his Majorcan roots. Most of the dishes he prepares are from his own original recipes. Some of Jon's specialties include the succulent Paella Valencia, garlic shrimp and his famous crab cakes, although Jon always has surprises to please inquisitive as well as traditional tastes.
